Roaming, Local SIM, or eSIM: What Each Changes

How you get mobile data abroad is a privacy and access decision, not just a cost decision. Roaming keeps your home number and often routes your data back through your home carrier. A local SIM makes you look local immediately and gives you a local number. A travel eSIM sits between the two. Each option changes which company sees your traffic, which country services think you are in, and whether your existing number keeps receiving messages.

Pick deliberately, because the wrong choice quietly breaks logins.

Roaming on your home carrier

Your phone registers on a partner network abroad, but your data may be carried back to your home carrier’s core network before reaching the internet — an arrangement often called home-routed roaming. Some agreements break out locally instead.

What it means in practice:

  • Your public address may belong to your home carrier, so websites can see you as being in your home country even though you are not.
  • Your home carrier remains the party handling your traffic, alongside the visited network.
  • Your usual number keeps working for calls and texts, which matters enormously for second factors.
  • Costs vary hugely by region and plan, and data allowances abroad are often smaller than at home.

The apparent-home-country effect is the interesting one. It can make home services work smoothly without any tunnel, and it can be confusing when you wanted to look local.

A local SIM from an operator in the country

You buy a plan from a carrier in the country you are visiting, and your phone becomes an ordinary local subscriber.

What it means in practice:

  • You get a local address, so you look local to every IP-based check. Local services, maps, and payment flows behave normally.
  • The local carrier handles your traffic and holds the subscriber record, under that country’s regulatory framework. Registration requirements for prepaid SIMs differ substantially between countries, so expect to present identification in some places and not others.
  • You get a new number, and your home number stops receiving texts unless you keep the original SIM active in a second slot.
  • Data is often much cheaper than roaming, and often much faster because it is not being backhauled.

This is the best option for a longer stay and the worst option for anyone whose accounts depend on SMS codes to their home number.

A travel eSIM

What it means in practice:

  • Convenience is the main draw: buy and activate before departure, keep your home SIM in place for calls and texts.
  • Your traffic passes through the eSIM provider’s arrangements as well as the host network, so the party you are trusting is a reseller you may know little about.

How each interacts with a VPN

A VPN sits on top of whichever connection you chose, and the choice changes what the VPN is doing for you.

  • On roaming, your traffic is already crossing your home carrier’s network. A tunnel prevents the visited network from observing your traffic and prevents your carrier from seeing destinations, but does not change the fact that you are their subscriber.
  • On a local SIM, a tunnel is doing more visible work: the local carrier is a party you have no relationship with, on a network whose filtering practices you do not know.
  • On a travel eSIM, the tunnel also shields you from the reseller, which is worth something given how little most travellers know about who is behind these products.

In all three cases the carrier still knows you connected, when, and roughly where your handset was, because that information is inherent to running a mobile network. A VPN changes what is inside the pipe, not the existence of the pipe.

The decision that actually matters: your second factor

Before optimising cost, work out how you receive login codes. If any important account sends codes by SMS to your home number, then:

  • roaming keeps that working,
  • a dual-SIM setup keeping your home profile active keeps that working,
  • and replacing your home SIM with a local one breaks it, sometimes irrecoverably while abroad.

A simple decision guide

  • Short trip, accounts tied to your home number: keep roaming, or a travel eSIM for data with the home SIM active for messages.
  • Longer stay, want to look and pay local: local SIM, but move your second factors to an authenticator app first.
